Four friends set out on an adventure enduring physical challenges to obtain spiritual enlightenment. They journeyed a portion of the Portuguese Path to Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, they enjoyed their companionship, suffered natures challenges, and endured sore muscles and blistered feet. Following an ancient Roman road like the original pilgrims, they traveled from Portugal to Spain. Other paths lead from France across the Pyrenees Mountains following through the north of Spain to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of Santiago. Gaining fame, Christians in increasing number made the arduous pilgrimage seeking forgiveness of their sins. As pestilence of disease, religious repression, and political violence increased, the volume of pilgrims to Santiago diminished. In the era of Francisco Franco, Spain began to encourage a resurgence of pilgrimages to Santiago. Local parishes along the route helped to mark the trail and to provide food and shelter to the pilgrims. In 2019 our four friends, each found his own mystical experience, and each enjoyed the food, drink and natural beauty and serenity of the trail. This is their story.
